- The Seminole Vo-Ed FFA Chapter raises $290+ with their "Kiss The Pig" fund raiser contest
September 16th, 2009
The Seminole Vocational Education Center's Student FFA Organization raised over $290 towards
helping send students to competition around the state. The winner of the event was Ms. Biram!
Mr. Veenstra kindly offered up $20 if Ms. Paioff would kiss Jethro...thus having an additional $20
thrown in to have Mr. Veenstra kiss Jethro... which also generated an additional $20 for
Mr. Shrum to kiss him. All complied and Jethro went home happy. The teachers? With bacon on
their collars.

The commercial arts class at SVEC is sponsoring a Get Zombified photo of you for only $3!
Our student designers will take your photo and use their design skills to make you look like
a ghoulish zombie just in time for Halloween! Describe what you'd like done or let our
designers go wild! Funds will go towards supplies for the class as well as the SkillsUSA
student organization to help pay for student competition expenses.
Your 8 1/2" x 11" photo is printed on photo paper and housed in a slip sleeve. We'll also
e-mail you a digital copy of your Before and After photos. Stop by SVEC between 7am and

The commercial arts class at SVEC is participating in a marketing campaign aimed at raising awareness of what
Seminole Vocational Education Center has to offer. The This Is My SVEC campaign will feature a poster
awareness for each class at each of the three feeder high school, videos for inclusion on YouTube and feeder
school morning shows, a billboard campaign with a national promotional company as well as SVEC T-Shirts
available for each class.

Pinellas County Schools is partnering with Progress Energy for the 17th annual Great American Teach on
Wednesday, November 18th 2009. Seminole Vo-Ed is looking for interested professionals who would like to tell some
as equally interested trade students about what you do and how you wound up doing it. Our school offers classes in
Carpentry and Construction Trades, Electrical Wiring, Floral Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Horticulture and
Environmental Technology, Commercial and Digital Arts and Veterinary Science for small and large animals.

- The FFA Chapter of Seminole Vo-Ed places eighth in the State of Florida in State Environmental
Science Contest Dec 8th, 2009
On Tuesday December 8th, Danni Jansen, Deanna Dreiling, Katie Manning, and Tim Griffith represented the SVEC
Chapter of FFA during a State Environmental Science competition in Live Oak FL.. The group left SVEC at 3:30am(!),
competed all day and wound up taking eighth place in the state. Congratulations to them and their Chapter Advisor
Ms. Paioff.

competition Dec 14th 2009
On Thursday December 10th, Seminole Vo-Ed FFA members competed in sub-district competition.
FFA Chairperson Angelina Villa-Lovern, Secretary Lindsey White and members Danni Jansen, Amy
Kirchgraber, Gemma Solon and Tim Griffith took first place in Parliamentary Procedure competition
while Katie Farling took first place in Extemporaneous Public Speaking. Excellent job! Good luck in

wrapped up a digital billboard design competition. Third level
designer Chandler Burke had her design selected and turned

- SVEC Carpentry class gears up to build temporary housing for the homeless January 6h, 2010
Project HOPE dropped off materials recently to the SVEC Carpentry class. Students will begin to construct two
temporary housing shelters for the homeless.
- SVEC Carpentey & Electricity student to receive National Accredited certification January 6h, 2010
· On Wednesday, January 13th SVEC and the Construction Trades Program will be honoring those students
who have successfully completed NCCER CORE and Level I certification in both Electrical and Carpentry. NCCER
maintains a credential and certification system through its National Registry. This provides transcripts, certificates,
and wallet cards to students who successfully complete the Contren® Learning Series curriculum through an NCCER
Accredited Sponsor. These valuable industry credentials benefit students as they seek employment and build their
careers.

- New Alternative Energy course to open at SVEC April 6th 2010
SVEC is finalizing plans for the opening of a new class on campus - Energy Solutions. The course deals with
sustainable, renewable and non-renewable energies and the skills needed to compete in the "green collar" job

The horticulture class at SVEC will be selling plants at this years Green Thumb Festival being held in Walter Fuller

- Seminole residents can now recycle at SVEC September 14h, 2010
SVEC is now hosting recycling bins for the Seminole community. We gladly accept all kinds of metals,
cardboard and paper. The recycle bins are located off 125th Street (just north of 86th Ave.) on the outer gate
of the SVEC campus. All donations will directly benefit students and programs at the Vo-Ed center.
- The Seminole Vo-Ed FFA Chapter upcoming Plant Sale December 12th Nov 8th, 2010
The SVEC horticulture department is currently in the planning stages for their next plant sale. Students will sell
self grown plants on December 12th from 9am-4pm at the Botanical Gardens in conjunction with the holiday lights
in the park event. Varieties will range from 4" container to 7 gallon with prices from $1-$15. Visit the SVEC

- The FFA Chapter of Seminole Vo-Ed places 3rd in State in Environmental Resource
competition Nov 8th 2010
The Seminole Vo-Ed FFA Chapter placed third in the state in the FFA Environmental Resource
Management competition. Held in Live Oak, FL on November 2nd 2010, team members participated in a
variety of events including water quality testing, GPS tracking, waste management, press release writing,
oral interview, written test; plant, tool, wildlife identification, and a group presentation. Team members
include Justin Gearhart, Maria Sessa, Caitlin Knight, Rachel Palmer and Angelina Villa-Lovern. Justin
ranked second high in the state as an individual. Congratulations to the team on their success.
- The Seminole Vo-Ed FFA Chapter volunteers during Farm City Week on November 20th Nov 8th, 2010
On Saturday November 20th from 9am-2pm, Seminole Vo-ED FFA members will volunteer at the second annual
Farm City Week celebration at Heritage Village. The event highlights the past, present, and future of Florida
agriculture with fun activities for children. FFA members will be showing youth how to make agriculturally related
crafts such as a pine cone bird feeder or turkey hat. All community members are encouraged to attend.

- Two SVEC students received volunteer recognition Nov. 8th 2010
Justion Gearhart and Rachel Palmer were both nominated by SVEC for the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community
Awards. Certificate of Achievement goes to Rachel Palmer for completing over 500 hours of volunteer service.
Certificate of Merit goes to Justin Gearhart for over 150 hours over several years. Rachel will also be judged in State
Competition.
- Community Recycling on the SVEC campus is catching on Nov. 8th 2010
Thanks to the Seminole community, SVEC recently received over $250 by recycling our metal dumpster and
cardboard Newspaper recycling is running at almost a ton a week. Way to go Seminole!
- SVEC Riding Club visits horse retirement home Nov. 8th 2010
SVEC vet instructor Peggy Biram recently took 5 students on a field trip to The Retirement Home for Horses in
Alachua, Florida. Retirement Home for Horses at Mill Creek Farm is a nonprofit equine sanctuary which provides
lifetime care to horses seized by law enforcement agencies, rescued by the SPCA or humane societies, horses
retired from government service such as police patrol or state and federal parks, and unwanted horses that are
destined for slaughter.

SVEC commercial arts class recently completed a project for the art class at Seminole Middle School.
STudents provided pictures of themselves and the commercial arts class photo retouched them in to zombies,
vampires and other monsters. Over 50 kids came to SVEC to view their ghoulish gallery and have a look
around our campus. We look forward to more visits from area middle schools. Have some kids interested in

- SVEC receives a media center library Nov 8th, 2010
SVEC took a step in the literary direction by procuring a brand new media center for the school. It will contain
industry related books and periodicals and also contain a new digital white board, computer lab and a kindle. The
center is scheduled to open by December.
- Horticulture class receives FNGLA Grant Dec 1st 2010
Congratulations to Ms. Paioff for being awarded a TeachHort.com Grant for preparing her students to become
FNGLA Certified Horticulture Professionals.Excellent job!
- The Seminole Vo-Ed FFA Chapter upcoming Plant Sale December 12th Nov 8th, 2010
The SVEC horticulture department students will sell self grown plants on December 12th from 9am-4pm at the
Botanical Gardens in conjunction with the holiday lights in the park event. Varieties will range from 4" container to
7 gallon with prices from $1-$15.

of holiday greeting. They will be available for purchase shortly.
- Commercial Arts class receives state-of-the-art iMac lab Dec 1s, 2010
The SVEC commercial arts class recently received a state-of-the-art, iMac lab featuring the latest (and largest)
models. Additionally the class will now have access to Bamboo digital pens as well as digital still and video cameras.
- SVEC holds their annual toy drive to benefit CASA Nov 8th, 2010
If you are interested in donating towards the SVEC annual Toy Drive to benefit CASA, then we
kindly request NEW, unwrapped toys or gifts for kids and teens up to the age of 18 to be donated
by Wednesday December 15th. Our staff will be collecting the toys items here in the front office of
the SVEC campus.
- Horticulture class receives Verizon Wireless Thinkfinity grant for, Artificial Wetlands Dec 1st 2010
Congratulations to Ms. Paioff for being awarded a $500 Verizon Wireless Thinkfinity grant for. The money will be
used to implement teaching about Artificial Wetlands into the class curriculum.
- SVEC Carpentry class featured on Bay News 9 Dec 8th 2010
Mr. Veenstra's carpentery class and their ongoing collaboration with Pinellas Hope garnered SVEC a visit and a
profile video from Bay News 9. The class is finishing up several casita houses which will help shelter the homeless.
- SVEC hosting Whacky Winter Olympics fundraiser for Skills USA & FFA Jan 3rd 2011
Get set for some wintertime fun as SVEC hosts the Whacky Winter Olympics to benefit Skills USA and FFA
organizations. Thursday, January 13th is the date during all three blocks. Parents are invited. A donation of $2 is

Seminole Vo-Ed Center has adopted a mile of road along 125th Street in Seminole. Our students and staff will be

campus library. SVEC is actively seeking members for their School Advisory Council. Become a part of something

campus to discuss school improvement goals, help facilitate community partnerships and to hear about student
achievement at the school. An hour or so each month of your time is all we ask in return. Whether you're a former

- Weekend Dog Obedience classes Jan 11th 2011
Congratulations to Peggy Biram for the facilitation of the weekend classes in dog obedience. Brandy Scalfani
and her dog won first place in obedience and second in rally. Jenna Kijowski and her dog won first in agility and
third in obedience
- Community Recycling on the SVEC campus Jan 11th 2011
Thanks to the Seminole community, SVEC recently received over $400 by recycling our metal, cardboard and
newspaper. Way to go Seminole!

- Seminole Vo-Ed FFA Chapter prepares for upcoming Florida State Fair competition Jan 11th 2011
The Seminole Vo-Ed FFA chapter will have 4 competitors in the Florida State Fair Youth Steer Futurity show and
sale coming up in February 2011. Competition days are February 12th - 13th. Competing will be:

• Ryan Buck showing “Domino”
• Kayla Bell showing “Waldo
• Alexandra Matthews showing “Zazu”
There will also be two competitors in the purebred breeding classes:
Brianna Dugan and Kaleigh Manning exhibiting Irish Dexter’s.
There will also be eight SVEC student competitors in the 2011 Florida State Fair Youth Swine Show and sale.

- SKILLS USA vs FFA Wacky Winter Olympics results! Jan 11th 2011
It was some seriously tough (and cold!) competition, but the SKILLS USA classes of SVEC (Carpentry, Electricity,
Commercial Arts and Energy Solutions) bested the FFA classes (Horticulture and Environmental Technology and
both veterinary classes). Students competed in box racing, cornhole, a relay tricycle race and duct tape someone
to a wall events. In the end, students raised more than $400 for SKILLS USA while the Seminole Vocational
Education Center FFA chapter students received over $250 in donations. Big congratulations to all students and
staff for making the event run smooth. Pictures are forthcoming.

- JDRF Walk To Cure Diabetes Fort DeSoto Park March 5th Feb 4th 2011
The Pinellas Walk to Cure Diabetes is on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Fort DeSoto Park in St. Petersburg.
Volunteers are needed to assist in a variety of areas including food, water, registration, kid's area, greeters, and
more. Most volunteers are needed from 6:30/7:00am- noon or shifts in between. A few volunteers are also needed
on Friday, March 12th to assist with setup at the park from 9am-noon. For more information and to get involved

and shown in the Dexter show. They also received a Blue Ribbon in the Danish System in youth
showmanship. (60 senior entries. The juniors and intermediate competed in separate divisions)

- SVEC student wins National SKILLS USA T-Shirt Design Contest March 2nd, 2011
SVEC student Andy Schaaf has won the National contest for Skills USA competitive T-Shirt design. Here's the
winning entry which was selected from over 500 submissions from around the country. Andy and his instructor will
receive a trip to Kansas City, MO to be recognized during the National SkillsUSA Conference in June of 2011.
Additionally, the SVEC commercial arts class will receive a $5000 grant from Lowe's and Andy's printed t-shirt
design will be issued to over 13,000 SkillsUSA students.

We had so many first-place, gold medal winners at this years state SkillsUSA competition, we've been

hosting a chicken dinner on Tuesday, May 24th. Enjoy live music, an auction of student produced goods and
services from the carpentry, horticulture and environmental technology, commercial arts and veterinary classes.

- SVEC students earn industry certification May 25th, 2011
SVEC had students earn industry recognized certifications in two areas this week. At least 25 kids from our carpentry
and electricity classes earned NCCER certification and six students from our commercial arts & digital design class
earned Adobe Certified Associate certification. Excellent job!
- SVEC students represent Florida in National SkillsUSA competition. June 13, 2011
SVEC students who won best in state during SkillsUSA state competition in May are now headed to Kansas City to
compete and represent SVEC and the State Of Florida in National competition. In addition to competing, students
will be attending trade seminars and a Kansas City Royals game.National T-Shirt design winner Andy Schaaf and
instructor Chris Juul will be recognized during the opening ceremonies in front of an estimated 13,000 students.

- SVEC Commercial Arts class produces three digital billboards in conjunction with Clear Channel
June 13th, 2011
Commercial Art students Terri Haupt, Mallory Shortway and Glady Elias each had their billboard designs selected
from 29 entries to represent and promote SVEC in a marketing campaign. Each billboard will be showcased on a
new Clear channel digital billboard placed on the corner of Park Blvd and 66th street. Clear Channel
Communications designer Richard Homer and Digital Media Specialist Andrew Fleming visited the class to offer
design advice along the way.






- SVEC students win Bronze and Silver medals at National SkillsUSA competition. June 26, 2011
SVEC students took home third and second places in the entire nation at the SkillsUSA national competition held in
Kansas City Kansas, June 25th. Five teams competed and their results are below. We're extremely proud of our
students for not only representing SVEC, but the state of Florida as well. Way to go!

- Dr. Peter Berry retires from SVEC. June 26, 2011
Dr. Peter Berry announced his retirement recently after serving this past year as Director of Seminole Vocational
Education Center. An article from the Seminole Beacon earlier this year details some of Dr. Berry's
accomplishments.
